What is CBT and How Does it Help?
Our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are all connected.
Cognitive behavior therapy, or CBT, sounds complex but is actually quite simple. It basically means that our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are all connected to each other and don’t just randomly appear. Our thoughts tell us how to feel, our feelings influence how we act, and then our actions play a big role in how we see the world and future thoughts we might have. One example that comes to mind is the child who is told “No Candy”. If the child throws a fit, the parent gives in, and the child gets candy, the child has now learned a pattern of behavior that results in getting candy, even if originally they are told “no”.
Once we learn to recognize our negative or worrisome thoughts as they appear, we can also learn to change the feelings we have about those thoughts and in turn change our behaviors. I love this therapy technique for all ages, but especially children because the skills learned at a young age are useful for a lifetime!
CBT Interventions
Cognitive interventions help individuals understand how their conditioning from early childhood is impacting their current relationships and influencing their behaviors. The goal is to help individuals recognize the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to create behavioral flexibility. We will work together to identify negative patterns, distorted thinking and work to decrease the influence your thoughts and feelings have over your behaviors. CBT is helpful for those increasing symptoms of anxiety, depression, marital distress and trauma. If you are interested in working together using CB T strategies to replace your current thoughts and behaviors with more positive ones, schedule a free intro call to see if we are a great fit.
